New York Mets could reportedly make big free agency splash when MLB lockout ends

New York Mets

The New York Mets made huge splashes in free agency before the MLB lockout, signing Max Scherzer, Starling Marte and Eduardo Escobar. When a new collective bargaining agreement is signed and MLB free agency opens, New York could reportedly make another big move.

Since buying the franchise, owner Steve Cohen has made it clear he is willing to spend to win. While the Mets didn’t make a ton of moves before the 2021 season, an aggressive approach in free agency resulted in four potential key contributors joining the team early this winter.

While New York will have one of the largest MLB payrolls in 2022, a new CBA could increase the luxury tax line. As a result, Cohen could be poised to spend even more money.

According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, the Mets could reportedly consider signing another significant pitcher once free agency opens. If that happens, the contract could be large enough that payroll at least approaches $300 million for the upcoming season.

If New York wants to strengthen its starting rotation, Clayton Kershaw and Carlos Rodón stand out as potential candidates. Either hurler could slot in behind Jacob deGrom and Scherzer, giving New York an electric trio of arms and one of the top postseason rotations.

In terms of hitters, Kris Bryant is the biggest name. Thanks to his versatility, he could alternate time at third base and in the corner outfield. With the National League implementing the designated hitter in the new CBA, it creates a new opening in the New York Mets lineup.
