While the New York Mets are likely to be sellers and have quite a few players up for grabs before the July 30 deadline, executives around the game only believe one specific player will actually fetch the organization “an average prospect.”
Entering the MLB games today, the New York Mets are 29-37 and quickly falling out of the National League Wild Card race. It has been a frustrating season as a roster that did not have high expectations has not lived up to previous levels and has been bedeviled by injuries to key players.

That is why the organization is expected to be one of the major sellers before the July 30 MLB trade deadline and could have several former All-Stars up for grabs, including slugger Pete Alonso. However, while the franchise was able to land some high-level prospects when they moved Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander in July 2023, a new report claims the return this time around will be far less compelling.
On Thursday, SNY MLB insider Andy Martino reported that “The consensus among rival executives and evaluators is that the Mets’ most valuable trade chip, by far, is their starting pitcher on Thursday, Luis Severino.”
- Luis Severino stats (2024): 4-2 record, 3.25 ERA, 1.139 WHIP, 58 SO, 27 BB, 72.0 IP
A high-ranking American League executive informed Martino that Severino could land the Mets “an average prospect” in a potential deal. Unfortunately, players like Harrison Bader, Adam Ottavino, and J.D. Martinez — who have their names thrown in trade speculation — are expected to get the team little in return.
When it comes to homegrown three-time All-Star Pete Alonso, executives around the game are split on his value with one claiming, “For a rental, you don’t get much of anything for Alonso unless there is a bidding war.” While another said he could be the type of impact player who could land several prospects and a big leaguer in a trade.
Severino has had a big bounce-back season after moving from the New York Yankees to the Mets in the offseason. He will hit free agency again later this year.
