New York Mets announcer Keith Hernandez always brings an honest assessment of how the team is playing. However, it seems one too-honest opinion that was saved for off-the-air moments was caught by a hot mic on Wednesday.
There are big expectations for the 2025 edition of the Mets. After they were able to surprisingly reach the NLCS last fall, the organization made the moves they hope can push the roster into being a serious World Series contender this season. And those hopes mostly rest on their expensive lineup.
The majority of their $321 payroll for this season is invested in their batting order after re-signing fan-favorite slugger Pete Alonso to a new contract and giving Juan Soto a record-shattering $765 million contract in the offseason. However, the group has gotten off to a rough start in 2025.
Heading into their Friday series opener against the Toronto Blue Jays, they have a team batting average of .188. And an OPS of .625. Both are near the bottom of the league to start the season. And it is a major reason why they are 3-3 after their first two series of the year.
Their terrible start to the year also seemed to be the subject of conversation in between the TV announcing team that was accidentally caught on a hot mic.
Keith Hernandez takes shot at New York Mets start to the season
During the Mets SNY broadcast on Thursday night analyst and team great Keith Hernandez is overheard saying, “Piss-poor hitting.” Seconds later, the music starts playing to come back from a commercial break, and play-by-play man Gary Cohen restarts the broadcast for the lead into the next inning.
Obviously, Hernandez was talking about the Mets’ bats. During a game where they scored just one run over the first seven innings. Fortunately, they avoided a 2-4 start to the season and second straight loss to the Miami Marlins. Scoring three in the eighth and two more in the eleventh to win 6-5.
Nevertheless, while his take was not meant for air, the former NL MVP has a point about how underwhelming the Mets’ offense has been after six games.
