The NFL trade deadline is fast approaching and with the New York Jets in a race with themselves to tank for Trevor Lawrence, rumors are swirling about the Jets making big moves.

Rebuilding the Jets isn’t a one-step process, it will require numerous decisions that will change the course of the team’s future. Fortunately, with the trade deadline closing in and general manager Joe Douglas already starting to sell off pieces, rumors could turn into action in a matter of weeks.

NY Jets rumors: Trade Avery Williamson to the Green Bay Packers

A borderline Pro Bowl performer the past several years, Williamson is finally seeing an uptick in action after being largely ignored by Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. That included playing in 44% of less of the Jets’ defensive snaps twice this season. Simply put, they are not using Williamson to the best of his ability.

That would not be an issue for the Packers. They need to find someone to replace tackle machine Blake Martinez, who departed in free agency this past spring. Moving Williamson to the Packers for a fourth-round pick makes too much sense for the Jets.

NY Jets rumors: Jets must fire Adam Gase

This is the most obvious move and it should have been done during the offseason. New York shouldn’t have hired Gase to begin with, but the organization convinced itself that he was an offensive genius. Even when he proved otherwise in 2019 and lost the respect of the locker room, New York stuck by him.

As it became evident just how disliked Gase was, including by multiple stars, the demand for him to be fired grew louder. Yet, even with some within the organization souring on him, he has outlasted Jamal Adams and Le’Veon Bell. Sitting at 0-6, New York won’t be firing Gase before Week 7.

It’s beyond time for him to be fired, but the Jets can do this with some flare. Firing Gase after Week 8, when the team will likely be blown out by Bell and the Kansas City Chiefs, would be a fitting end to this partnership. Given the growing calls for him to be fired and how he has treated players this season, sending him out after Week 8 is deserved.

Trade Sam Darnold to the Indianapolis Colts

There’s a real possibility that Gase and the Jets’ offense did irreversible damage to Darnold’s potential. However, this is still a 23-year-old quarterback with plenty of physical talent for a great coach to groom. Given New York will be drafting a new franchise signal-caller with their first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, it only makes sense to trade Darnold now.

NFL rumors: Could the Jets trade Sam Darnold?

New York obviously won’t get a first-round pick back in return for the No. 3 overall pick in 2018. Instead, the Jets might have to settle for a second-round selection from a playoff contender. Given this organization hasn’t done much to help Darnold in his NFL career, sending him to Indianapolis would be a nice gesture.

Indianapolis is the perfect landing spot for Darnold. He can spend the rest of the season learning from Philip Rivers and head coach Frank Reich. After learning the offense, Darnold would be ready to step in next season as the starter. In exchange, the Jets received a 2021 second-round pick from the Colts and a conditional 2022 fourth-round pick that escalates based on starts and wins.

NFL trade deadline: Send DL Quinnen Williams to the Cleveland Browns

The Jets would prefer to keep Williams and as of now want a second-round pick to move him. If this front office is serious about a rebuild, which it’s impossible to argue isn’t needed, moving the No. 3 overall pick from the 2019 NFL Draft is necessary.

Williams is a quality player and his contract is more than acceptable for a player with his talent. He would be a tremendous addition for the Browns. Plugging him in along the interior defensive line would be a massive boost for Cleveland’s defense, making life for Myles Garrett even easier. In exchange, the Jets receive Cleveland’s 2021 third-round pick and its 2022 fourth-round selection.

Jets rumors: Trade Chris Herndon, Brian Poole to the Buffalo Bills

New York is wasting Herndon’s talents and Poole is playing out a one-year contract for a team that doesn’t need depth in its secondary. Trading Herndon and Poole separately could be an option for the Jets, but packaging them together might maximize the return.

While trades within the division are rare, New York is in no position to limit its market. The current coaching staff has tanked Herndon’s value and rental players like Pool rarely land great compensation. So, the Jets send both to an AFC East squad that has big needs in both spots. In exchange, Buffalo sends its 2021 fifth-round pick and a 2022 fifth-round selection.

Jets depth chart: Make La’Mical Perine the starting running back

Everyone loves Frank Gore, likely no one more so than Adam Gase. Once he is out of the picture, New York’s interim coach needs to prioritize the future. With that rationale in mind, Gore heads into a complementary role and Perine becomes the featured back in this offense.

The circumstances aren’t ideal for the rookie to thrive, but the Jets need to see what they got from their fourth-round pick. We’ve seen him received some work this season, but it’s beyond time for the 5-foot-11 back to step into a larger role. Given the explosive ability he showed at Florida, racking up 3,159 scrimmage yards and 30 total touchdowns, he might just be a long-term piece for this offense.
