New York Giants owner says no to Deshaun Watson trade

Well there goes the idea of trading for Deshaun Watson. Based on the introductory press conference by new general manager Joe Schoen, the New York Giants are sticking with Daniel Jones under center in 2022. Team owner John Mara also shot down any rumors of a possible Watson trade to Big Blue.

Previously it had been thought that Watson would like to play for the Giants since he has ties to the area and since the Giants have been linked to Brian Flores, who many believe Watson wants to play for. But Mara, the Giants owner specifically stated “We’re not trading for Deshaun Watson“.

While he’s obviously a controversial figure, it’s impossible to ignore the ability Watson has. The Giants may not have an elite pass-protecting offensive line either, but Watson has never had protection in the pocket. He’s already shown an ability to elevate his team to the playoffs despite a less-than-perfect situation, who’s to say Watson couldn’t replicate the same success with the New York Football Giants?

While the Giants potentially have the draft capital to pursue a Deshaun Watson trade, their cap situation isn’t ideal. The G-Men currently project to be roughly six million over the cap, needing to clear space just to begin the league year.

So it makes sense they won’t be looking to take on Watson’s $32 million base salary he’s scheduled to earn in 2022.

Who will be under center? As the Giants’ new GM stated, they’d prefer to build around their sixth overall selection from the 2019 NFL Draft.

Instead, they won’t be taking their chances on pursuing greatness, preferring to stick with Danny Dimes, which is a fine route as well. This way, the Giants can hold onto their assets and not have to fork over the cash for Watson’s next contract. Using the draft capital they’ve acquired, the G-Men may very well be able to have a quick one-season turnaround.

Imagine if the organization hired Brian Daboll away from the Buffalo Bills? Josh Allen has drastically improved year by year, if Daboll has any idea on how to get the most out of Danny Dimes, Giants fans might be able to enter the season as optimistic as ever.

We’ll see who they hire to be their next head coach, but even if it is Brian Flores, it seems like we can cross Deshaun Watson off the list for the New York Giants.
