New York Giants identified as team to ‘keep an eye on’ for bold move in 2024 NFL Draft

The New York Giants have already made significant changes to their coaching staff for 2024 with head coach Brian Daboll likely on the hot seat next season. With pressure mounting on the front office, it appears quarterback Daniel Jones isn’t guaranteed long-term security with New York.

Jones, owed $35.5 million fully guaranteed in 2024, is still recovering from season-ending ACL surgery but the expectation remains he’ll be cleared to start in Week 1. While the Giants’ quarterback is making steady progress in his recovery, New York might not be committed to him as a surefire starter.

When New York signed Jones to a four-year, $160 million contract extension last offseason, it structured the deal with an escape plan. After the 2024 season, the Giants can cut Jones in 2025 for $19.395 million in cap savings (pre-June 1 release) or even $30.5 million if he’s designated as a post-June 1 release.

Thanks to how Jones’ contract was structured and his previous issues before the 2022 season, it seems there is a possibility of New York using its top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft on a quarterback.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, Giants’ general manager Joe Schoen attended multiple games this fall with quarterbacks Caleb Williams and Michael Penix Jr. starring on the field. New York has also been identified as a team to “keep an eye on” for jockeying up the draft board to potentially land a long-term quarterback.

It is noted that if the Giants want to land one of the top quarterback prospects – Williams, Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels – they will have to jump up from No. 6 overall. While New York has other needs on its roster, the potential opportunity to land someone like Daniels could be appealing.

It’s possible trading up for a rookie quarterback could also buy more time for Schoen and Daboll. They could sell Giants’ ownership on needing time to be a rookie, with the promise of adding significant talent to the roster after taking Jones’ contract off the books in 2025.

With the New England Patriots open to trading down from No. 3 overall, there could be at least one opportunity for the Giants to land Daniels or Maye if they believe either quarterback is a superior option over Jones long-term.
