On Monday, former Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, was introduced as the 20th head coach of the New York Giants.

Daboll and new general manager Joe Schoen have a tall task in front of them, trying to build credibility to a franchise that has gone 22-59 over the last five seasons. But the duo seems excited and confident that they can change the franchise fortunes around just as they did with the Bills.

In his opening statement, Daboll talked about the job at hand.

“Got a lot of work to do, that’s for sure, but I think that this is a very enticing job to be able to work with Joe and try to create and build something that’s very special and long-lasting. I’m not going to make any promises or predictions, but, again, just very grateful and look forward to working,” the new Giants’ head coach told reporters.

A key factor in the hiring of Daboll was the hope that he can turn the Giants offense from putrid and predictable, to innovative and explosive. In order for this to happen, Daboll must find a way to maximize quarterback Daniel Jones’ talent and find a way to keep Jones healthy.

“He was one of the players that called me after it was announced amongst some other guys and I said, ‘hey, give me some things that you really liked in your last three years or if you did it at Duke,’ and that’s where it’s going to start is some foundational pieces that he feels comfortable with. I think we’ll add good coaches. We’ll have a good support system, and we’ll try to bring in the best players we can bring in.”

One of the coaches that might be added to Daboll’s staff is Bills offensive line coach Bobby Johnson. It’s been speculated Monday evening that Johnson would leave his position with the Bills and join Daboll and Schoen with Big Blue.

There will surely be more changes within the Giants’ coaching staff. However, there’s one coach Daboll would like to retain and that’s defensive coordinator Patrick Graham. Daboll and Graham have a prior working relationship when they were both on the New England Patriots’ staff.

Graham is a candidate for several head coaching jobs, and Daboll said if he doesn’t get hired as a head coach, he wants him back as the defensive coordinator.

In his opening press conference, Daboll came off as a straight shooter with a humorous personality, that works hard at his craft. It’s also apparent that camaraderie is very important to him.

Time will tell if he can turn the Giants into contenders but as of right now there’s a sense of optimism in the New York Giants’ building thanks to their new head coach.
