The New England Patriots have a decision to make with their first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Coming off their worst season since 1992, the Patriots are slated to select third overall.
We’ve obviously read reports of New England’s interest in adding a potential franchise quarterback to the mix after moving off the failed Mac Jones experiment three seasons in.
It’s a big decision for front office head Eliot Wolf and Co. with exactly one week to go ahead of the annual draft.
There has also been rumors about New England potentially trading down from the third pick and collecting more assets. After all, the team is not a quarterback away from contention after posting a 4-13 record a season ago. Wolf seemed to confirm on Thursday that this is a real possibility.
“We’re open for business, Wolf told reporters. “We have a lot of holes to fill through the draft and we feel the more picks we have the better.”
Wolf also indicated that New England could stand pat at three and add at another position outside of quarterback. Though, that seems to be media play to entice other front offices at this stage in the pre-draft process.

New England Patriots trade options in the 2024 NFL Draft
- New York Giants: There have been reports that New York is looking to find Daniel Jones’ heir-apparent in the 2024 NFL Draft. General manager Joe Schoen and Co. — picking No. 6 overall — could even look to trade up. They have been linked primarily to J.J. McCarthy and Drake Maye. In this scenario, New England would be able to add the Giants’ third-round pick (70th) and fourth-round selections (107th) as well as a Day 2 pick in 2025.
- New York Jets: This one might come out of the blue. The Jets obviously aren’t looking to move up for a quarterback. Rather, their primary goal is to find an immediate impact player to make the most of Aaron Rodgers’ twilight. The idea would be to move up from 10 to No. 3 for former Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. to team up with Garrett Wilson in Jersey. From a practical team-building standpoint, the Patriots could likely acquire New York’s first-round pick in 2025 and a third-round selection this year.
- Minnesota Vikings: It’s clear that Minnesota is angling for a trade up into the top five. It acquired an additional first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft in a deal with the Houston Texans earlier this offseason. The Vikes now boast picks No. 11 and 23 in the annual event. Those two picks would be the starting-off point as it relates to New England making a move. Add in a third-round selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, and this would make the most sense in the world.

- Las Vegas Raiders: Yet another team linked to trade-up scenarios in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Raiders need to find themselves a franchise quarterback. They’re slated to select 13th overall and have been linked to Michael Penix Jr. of Washington. That seems to be a reach at 13. Instead, new general manager Tom Telesco pulls off a blockbuster trade with New England. Vegas sends its second-round pick in 2024 as well as both its first and second-round selections in 2025 to the Patriots in this scenario.
