Cook Out 400 predictions

Ryan Blaney wins Stage 1

While he is 10th in the standings heading into Martinsville, Ryan Blaney has easily been one of the five best drivers this season. Unfortunately, the engine on the No. 12 car has blown up twice, causing two of his three DNFs. He now heads to Martinsville, where he has the highest average finishing position (3.5) with two wins and five top-5 finishes. However, we’re not quite ready to say he’ll win the Cook Out 400. Keep in mind that Blaney’s wins at Martinsville have come late in the year (Oct. 29 and Nov. 3), without a single win in the spring races. We do think he’ll take Stage 1, but don’t bank on a victory.

Kyle Busch finishes outside top-20 for third consecutive race

Early in the season, it looked like Kyle Busch would be turning things around after a winless 2024 campaign. From Atlanta Motor Speedway through COTA and Phoenix Raceway, Biusch racked up 105 points with three top-10 finishes, where he never finished worse than eighth. However, he was a non-factor at Homestead (21st) and had issues at Las Vegas (33rd). Unfortunately, the Cook Out 400 won’t be his fixer. Busch ranks 27th in average finishing position (21.3) at Martinsville. Part of the problem is where he starts – 20.0 average starting position in the last five races – which has certainly factored into the No. 8 finishing just once in the top 20 (16th in the Cook Out 400 last year) since 2022. Busch is going to leave Virginia without a single stage point and his streak of finishes outside the top 20 continues on Sunday.

Bubba Wallace gets 40-plus points at Martinsville

It hasn’t been a perfect season for Bubba Wallace with a blown tire and brake issues costing him strong finishes twice this season. However, he has the fourth-highest average starting position (11.2), the sixth-most laps led (98) and his pit crew has consistently been one of the fastest in recent weeks. The No. 23 team now heads to Martinsville, where Wallace has had three top-10 finishes in the last five races. He has also started in the top-10 in three of the last four at Martinsville. We’re predicting a strong showing for Wallace on Sunday, recording 10-plus combined points from both stages with a top-10 finish to depart with 40-plus points on the day.

William Byron wins the Cook Out 400

While Blaney is a great pick to win the Cook Out 400, we’re picking the driver who has consistently done the best this season. William Byron has the best average finishing position (8.7) this season, in huge part because the No. 24 has started 8th or better in four of six races this year. Byron won the Cook Out 400 last year, too. While repeat winners are fairly rare, the way Byron has been driving this season is spectacular. With Hendricks Motorsports dominating the Cup Series, we believe Byron leads the way with a win on Sunday.
