The Miami Dolphins just missed the playoffs last season. One of the easy excuses is to point the finger at Tua Tagovailoa’s durability as a big reason why the Dolphins came up short.

After all, their franchise quarterback played in just 11 games last season and the Dolphins went 2-4 in games not started by their Pro Bowl QB. Naturally, the Dolphins made finding a capable backup a priority this offseason and they can already cross this need off the checklist.

On the first day of NFL free agency, the Miami Dolphins agreed to a one-year, $6 million contract with former Denver Broncos quarterback Zach Wilson. According to ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter, the contract could be worth up to $10 million, if Wilson hits specific escalators that have not been revealed to the public.

Wilson, who’s still just 25, was traded to the Broncos last season after the No. 2 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft spent three seasons with the New York Jets. He led his former team to a 12-21 record and was viewed as a potential solution in Denver as they searched for a new franchise quarterback.

Yet, once Bo Nix ran away with the starting quarterback competition, Wilson was relegated to QB3 duties behind Nix and Jarrett Stidham who had the advantage of spending the previous year in Sean Payton’s system. However, Wilson drew rave reviews during his time in Denver and now Miami potentially stands to benefit from a player who never reached his full potential coming out of BYU.
