NFL insider believes Miami Dolphins could make surprise decision with top pick in NFL Draft

The Miami Dolphins don’t have many high-value picks in the 2023 NFL Draft, and a league insider believes the team could make a surprise decision with their top pick this month.

Last season was quite frustrating for the Miami Dolphins. The team’s offense took major leaps forward in 2022 with new head coach Mike McDaniel overseeing things, star receiver Tyreek Hill delivering in his first season in Miami, and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa showing he has the potential to be a Pro Bowl-level player.

Unfortunately, a pair of concussions for Tagovailoa cut his seasons short and the team was left having third-string QB Skylar Thompson starting in their Wild Card Playoff loss after backup Teddy Bridgewater also was out with an injury.

Many in the Miami Dolphins organization believe they are not far off from being a serious Super Bowl contender. It’s why they made one of the biggest trades of the offseason to acquire superstar cornerback Jalen Ramsey and it reportedly is also guiding their strategy for the 2023 NFL Draft.

Miami Dolphins record (2022): 9-8, second place in AFC East

On Wednesday, Sports Illustrated NFL insider Albert Breer answered questions from NFL fans and one inquired about the Miami Dolphins possibly trading out from their first pick at 51. In his response, Breer explained why that is a likely possibility for the organization this month.

“If you look at the roster, you see that the big building blocks are there. The Dolphins have receivers (Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle), a left tackle (Terron Armstead), edge rushers (Bradley Chubb, Jaelan Phillips), and corners (Jalen Ramsey, Xavien Howard) plus a quarterback (Tua Tagovailoa) they really like. All of which means, at this point, [general manager] Chris Grier is looking for complementary pieces rather than cornerstones. So it makes sense, then, to build up some volume to find guys who can give you depth.”

The Miami Dolphins own picks 51, 84, 197, and 238 in this 2023 NFL Draft. Trading some of their most valuable picks could allow them to cultivate more in later rounds to get that aforementioned depth.
