The Kansas City Chiefs prevented cornerback L’Jarius Sneed from testing NFL free agency by placing the franchise tag on him. However, the top defensive back is already being floated in NFL trade rumors with a swarm of clubs reportedly planning to pursue him.
While Kansas City wants to re-sign its top cornerback, the emergence of Trent McDuffie along with the dire need to retain All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones makes Sneed more expendable. As a result, the club allowed Sneed’s agent to explore trade options if the two sides can’t agree to a long-term deal.

It’s far from a guarantee that Sneed will leave this offseason. He may decide to return next season, playing out the year on the franchise tag and then cashing in again with an even bigger deal in 2025. However, he wants to be paid now and the likeliest path to a long-term deal is outside Kansas City.

According to Tyler Dragon of USA Today, the Chiefs have received inquiries on Sneed from the Indianapolis Colts, Minnesota Vikings, New England Patriots, Atlanta Falcons, Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Lions and Tennessee Titans.

Sneed, entering his age-27 season, proved he could be a premier outside cornerback last season and he frequently held his own in matchups against some of the best wide receivers in the NFL. He also brings versatility, with a background of playing in the slot.
The Chiefs’ contract negotiations with Jones will also likely play a significant role in Sneed’s ultimate landing spot. If Kansas City is unable to re-sign its top defensive tackle and he departs in NFL free agency, then Sneed would likely be the top defender receiving a long-term deal from the club this offseason. If Sneed is traded, Kansas City is expected to receive a 2024 second-round pick in exchange, at a minimum.
