The Dallas Cowboys just became the first No. 2 seed to lose to a No. 7 seed in NFL Playoff history, falling to the Green Bay Packers 48-32. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones immediately faced questions about head coach Mike McCarthy’s job security as soon as the media could get ahold of him.

Once reached, Jones was clearly in pain, feeling shocked and defeated, much like his Cowboys were. But the biggest question was about whether McCarthy was on the hot seat and when he planned to have a meeting with the Cowboys’ head coach.

“There’s nothing set on that. What I had planned to do was be with him tomorrow going over how we played today and getting ready for the coming week. That’s what was on the agenda. Tomorrow, my agenda will be to dismiss the team.”

Additionally, Jones said he was “floored,” and it was “one of the biggest surprises” he’s experienced. However, it’s not like he was overly upset with his team; he also wanted to “give Green Bay a lot of compliments and credit.”

“This seems like the most painful [playoff loss] because we all had such great expectation and we had hope for this team. I thought we were aligned and in great shape but it didn’t happen for us. And it’s as fresh on me right now as it is on anybody else, but I won’t get into any of the addressing of any aspects of any part of it, from coaching to players to what’s around the corner.”

It’s clear there are bigger questions and possibly bigger moments ahead over the next few days. Yet, with the Cowboys having Super Bowl expectations every year, knowing they fell well short of their goals in an embarrassing fashion won’t make the decision any easier. Especially when there’s a Hall of Fame coach waiting for a job.
