Philadelphia Eagles star quarterback Jalen Hurts suffered a finger injury in Sunday’s ugly loss to the New York Giants.

The injury happened in the first half. While Hurts did return to action shortly thereafter, the Eagles opted to sit him. Whether the game situation played a role in this remains to be seen.

Philadelphia fell down 24-0 at halftime to New York. It needed the Washington Commanders to defeat the Dallas Cowboys with a win over the Giants in order to take the NFC East.

At the time of Hurts’ injury, things were not trending in that direction. It led to the belief that said injury was minor despite the middle finger on his throwing hand looking pretty bad.

Hurts talked with reporters after Philadelphia lost its fifth game in six tries to conclude the regular season. When asked about the injury, he was non-committal about playing next week in the wild card round against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“We’re taking it day by day,” Hurts told reporters.

By virtue of their disastrous end to the regular season, the Eagles must now go into Tampa Bay during NFL Wild Card Weekend. After starting 10-1, things have spiraled for Hurts and the Eagles. That came to a culmination in a 27-10 loss to the previously five-win Giants in Jersey.

“In the end it’s about how you respond. We have to respond,” Hurts told reporters.

It still seems highly likely that Hurts will be able to go. But when we’re talking about an injury to the middle finger of a quarterback’s throwing hand, the question here is whether he’ll be 100%.

Much like the rest of his Eagles, Hurts has struggled over the past six games. This span has seen him account for five touchdown passes and five interceptions.

The good news here for Philadelphia is that star wide receiver A.J. Brown’s knee injury doesn’t seem to be as severe as it initially looked. He also exited in the first half against New York and did not return to action.
