Ja Morant, who returned from a 25-game suspension and had led the Grizzlies to a turnaround from a terrible start, is having season-ending surgery, the Grizzlies announced.
The team said that Morant suffered a subluxation of his right shoulder at a workout on Saturday.
“Following ongoing soreness and instability, Morant underwent an MRI that revealed an underlying labral tear.”
The team said Morant should make a full recovery to be ready for the 2024-25 season.
Ja Morant had been playing well since return from suspension
Morant was suspended for multiple social videos that he was shown brandishing a gun.
He has only played in nine games this season. He was averaging 25.1 points, 8.1 assists, 5.6 rebounds and was shooting 47% from the field. He had three 30 point games since his return.
The Grizzlies were 6-3 in games that he played and were hoping to make a playoff push.
