The Green Bay Packers enter the offseason needing to improve their secondary, and the team actually has an interesting asset that could help them land one of the best young safeties on this year’s free-agent market.
The 2023 NFL season was a pleasant surprise for the Packers and their fanbase. After pulling off a blockbuster trade that shipped team legend Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets, Jordan Love being the new starter led to much lower expectations. But the team surpassed them by getting to the playoffs and even scored a huge upset win over the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card Round.

They look to 2024 as a team on the rise and they have a bit of cash to make some improvements to a young and talented roster. One major area of need is the secondary, especially the two safety spots. The organization is sure to be active in that market and one player they might have a solid chance of landing is New York Giants star Xavier McKinney.

While there will be quite a few suitors for the 24-year-old when free agency opens on March 11 Green Bay may have a leg up in the chase. The reason is the offseason addition of defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley. The coach could be key in signing McKinney because he trained the young star into an NFL talent at Alabama and the two have a good relationship.
The four-year veteran was asked about the possibility of signing with the Green Bay Packers in free agency during a Thursday appearance on FanDuel TV’s “Up and Adams” and he admitted the news actually “intrigued him.” Could a reunion with his old coach in Wisconsin be on the horizon?
