The Green Bay Packers have seemingly struck gold at quarterback once again, with Jordan Love emerging as a high-end starter at the end of the 2023 NFL season. Now that Love has proven himself, though, the Packers will reportedly need to make him one of the highest-paid NFL players.
Before he took his first snaps as the Packers starting quarterback in 2023, Green Bay signed Love to a contract extension. As detailed by NFL.com, the former first-round pick agreed to terms on a one-year deal that would keep him under contract through the 2024 season and guaranteed him $13.5 million.

It was a prove-it deal for the young quarterback, with Green Bay planning to use the 2023 season as a litmus test to determine if he was worth investing in. While he struggled early on, Love was one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL down the stretch and cemented his status as the Packers’ face of the franchise.
However, Love’s performance also drove up his asking price in contract talks. With their future at the position secured, Green Bay now has to negotiate a long-term deal and the franchise is reportedly already prepared for it to cost them a significant amount of money.

During an appearance on ESPN’s SportsCenter, NFL insider Jeremy Fowler reported that the Packers are “hoping” to agree to terms on a contract extension with Love that would make him one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in football.
“The Packers are committed to getting something done with Love. He got the proof of concept last year with the big season, so they believe he’s their future. This could heat up after the draft. He’s due to make around $10 million next year. Signed a one-year bridge deal last offseason; should be a lot bigger, putting him somewhere probably in the top-10 highest-paid passers.”

The timing of a contract extension for Love is rather critical for Green Bay, largely due to the potential price it will have to pay. While the Dallas Cowboys are taking an unusual approach to negotiations with Dak Prescott, the Pro Bowl quarterback’s value is estimated between $55-to-$60 million per season on his next deal.
Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff is also due for a contract extension and the Kirk Cousins’ deal with the Atlanta Falcons assured that Goff will be making at least $50 million annually. If the Packers can extend Love’s contract before either of those two quarterbacks sign new deals, it will avoid paying an even higher price down the line.
