Packers draft analysis 2024: Pick-by-pick analysis of the Packers draft class

Round 1, 25th overall: Jordan Morgan, OL, Arizona

The Packers selected Arizona Wildcats offensive lineman Jordan Morgan with the 25h overall pick. Minutes earlier, the Detroit Lions leapfrogged Green Bay to select Alabama cornerback Terrion Arnold. Addressing the offensive line always felt like the eventual outcome for Green Bay, but the selection of Morgan is odd.

Daniel Brugler of The Athletic rated Morgan as a Day 1-2 player, listing him as the second-best guard in the 2024 NFL Draft. Lance Zierlein of NFL.com ranked him as a second-round talent, comparing him to Charles Leno Jr. Morgan did look solid in his first year back from an ACL tear and there are some traits (athleticism) to become a solid starter, but passing on Graham Barton and Cooper DeJean feels like a bizarre move.

The one promising thing is Green Bay’s background in offensive line development suggests Morgan has a very real shot to become an above-average starter on the Packers’ offensive line. If he does play right tackle, it’s worth keeping in mind that Green Bay thinks Zach Tom can be an All-Pro guard and might have an even higher ceiling at center.

Round 2, 45th overall: Edgerrin Cooper, LB, Texas A&M

After adding safety Xavier McKinney in NFL free agency, the Packers addressed another hole on their defense that has hampered them in recent years. Texas A&M Aggies linebacker Edgerrin Cooper brings phenomenal speed to the table, with the ability to cover sideline-to-sideline. He also turns that speed into some violent hits, plus, he can be used as a blitzer.

There’s significant upside with Cooper, but college football has also done an awful job at developing off-ball linebackers. Similar to Patrick Queen, who Cooper has received some NFL comparisons to, Cooper could face a steep learning curve in the NFL. However, he’s a high-upside pick at a position of need.

Round 2, 58th overall: Javon Bullard, S, Georgia

The Packers found their safety to complement McKinney. Javon Bullard is listed as a safety, but he can also do a lot more. He’s proven capable of playing in the slot, both coming down as a run defender and offering quality instincts in coverage. He’s not an elite athlete, but Bullard makes up for it with his football IQ and positioning. He could’ve been an option for Green Bay at the 45th overall pick, but patience pays off. He should see plenty of snaps in the nickel, but it’s the positional versatility that the Packers likely value the most.

Round 3, 88th overall: MarShawn Lloyd, RB, USC

We’ll start with the negative, MarShawn Lloyd had a bit of a fumbling problem and that’s something that will need to be addressed in order for him to avoid getting into the proverbial coach’s dog house. However, there are qualities there that could make him a very good starter down the line. He’s a very good pass-catcher for his position, one of the best in this class, and his burst is paired with the ability to bounce off first contact and maintain his balance. He might be the 1B behind Josh Jacobs in 2024, but Lloyd also enters the NFL with a limited workload. Assuming Jacobs only sticks around in Green Bay for a season for two, Lloyd can absolutely be the Packers running back of the future.

Round 3, 91st overall: Ty’Ron Hopper, LB, Mizzou

After seeing the Packers take Edgerrin Cooper earlier in the night, it’s quite a surprise to see Day 2 come to a close with Green Bay taking Ty’Ron Hopper. The Missouri Tigers linebacker was rated as a fifth-round talent by NFL.com and Dane Brugler of The Athletic ranked him as the 11th-best linebacker and a fifth-round prospect. If you’re looking for positives, Hopper is a good athlete who can put that to good use when deployed as a blitzer or if sitting back in coverage. Of note, he had a 4.68 40-yard dash at his Pro Day and had a pre-draft visit with Green Bay in early April. He’s likely going to be a special-teams player and occasional rotational linebacker on passing downs.
