Green Bay Packers CEO Mark Murphy reiterates desire for Aaron Rodgers to remain with team in 2022

We’re almost into the offseason, but for 30 of the 32 NFL teams, they’re already in full development of making whatever plans they can before the player movement frenzy begins. We’ve all heard the trade rumors regarding Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers for the past few seasons, and this might be the year something actually happens on that front.

But if you ask Packers president and team CEO Mark Murphy, he doesn’t think there needs to be any major changes at the QB position in Green Bay. It’s not surprising to hear a team not wanting to part with who is likely to be a four-time MVP award winner. Still, the reconfirmation has to be music to the ears of Packer fans who have enjoyed watching AR12’s greatness over his 14-years as the starting quarterback.

As many Packers followers are aware, Murphy writes a monthly column for the official team website. On Saturday morning, the latest release was revealed and it contained some nuggets fans may find interesting. Yet, none were more telling than his comments about Rodgers.

Here’s what Murphy wrote:

“A key factor will be whether Aaron Rodgers comes back for the 2022 season. Matt, Brian, executive vice president/director of football operations Russ Ball and I are all in agreement that we want Aaron to come back. He is likely to win his fourth league MVP, is the unquestioned leader of our team and is still playing at a high level at 38.”

Will Aaron Rodgers force the hand of the Green Bay Packers?

As mentioned, it’s nice to hear that the team doesn’t have any plans to move on from AR12, but aside from when they selected Jordan Love in the first round back in 2020, that’s never really been the concern anyway.

The issue is and has always been dependent on the desires of Aaron Rodgers, and whether he wants to stick around in Green Bay. Obviously a wide number of teams would leap at the opportunity to add a Super Bowl-winning QB at the top of his game to their roster.

For the Packers, they’ve struggled to capitalize on the success of Rodgers. While he has one ring for his accomplishments, it remains inexplicable that one of the greatest quarterbacks of our generation has just one Super Bowl win. At 38 years old, this fact likely weighs on the shoulders of Rodgers, when considering his impact on the game of football as a whole.

When he eventually retires, will Rodgers be held in much of a different class than say Drew Brees or Ben Roethlisberger? Most would say Rodgers should be head and shoulders above them, but each also won a ring in their illustrious careers. Actually, Big Ben won two.

If Rodgers had any say in the grand scheme, he’d have multiple rings, but he seems to have some regrets over his time with the Packers. This could be the offseason when push comes to shove, and he shoves his way out of Green Bay.
