Just days away from their game against the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC title game, the Detroit Lions made a surprise late-season move by adding a three-time Pro Bowler to the roster for one of the biggest games in franchise history.

On Sunday, the Lions made team history in their victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. For the first time in over 30 years, they will have a chance to reach their first Super Bowl ever. The entire city is excited about their matchup against the 49ers this weekend and there is an all-hands-on-deck approach to getting a win from everyone near and even outside the organization.

In an attempt to bolster their chances of reaching Super Bowl 57 in Las Vegas, the organization actually made a surprising last-minute addition to the roster on Monday. NFL Media league insider Tom Pelissero was one of the first to report that “Three-time Pro Bowl TE Zach Ertz is signing with the Detroit Lions, per sources.”

In the post on X, formerly Twitter, the NFL insider also added that “Ertz will start out on the practice squad, with plans to potentially elevate him for the NFC Championship Game.”

The three-time Pro Bowler asked for and was granted a release from the Arizona Cardinals in late November. However, he never signed with a team since then. Most probably forgot the 12-year veteran was even available at this point. It is no guarantee he can play but he is still another nice weapon on short-notice for Jared Goff against an elite 49ers defense on Sunday.
