The Detroit Lions’ brass has made it clear that they view Jared Goff as the long-term solution at the quarterback position.

After leading Detroit to unprecedented modern success for the franchise this season, the team could end up rewarding the former No. 1 pick with an historic contract.

Leading up to Detroit’s NFC Championship Game matchup with the San Francisco 49ers, Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz notes that the team is expected to make Goff one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL this offseason.

“I believe that Jared Goff is going to be one of the highest-paid quarterbacks this offseason. He is going to demand significant money on an extension.”

Goff currently finds himself as the 16th highest-paid quarterback in the NFL at $33.5 million. He signed his current four-year, $134 million contract with the Los Angeles Rams before they dealt him to Detroit in the blockbuster Matthew Stafford trade ahead of the 2021 season. His current deal runs through the 2024 campaign.

It’s no surprise that reports of the Lions engaging Goff in extension talks this coming offseason are popping up. General manager Brad Holmes and Co. have made it clear that this was the plan dating all the way back to September.

“We’ve kept open dialogue with their agents in camp and I think the transparency has been good, so we’ll see how it goes,” Holmes said before the start of the 2023 NFL season.

The question here is value. If we are indeed looking at Goff becoming one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL, that would likely equate to a raise in the $13 million per-year range.

Cleveland Browns’ Deshaun Watson is currently the eighth highest-paid signal caller in the NFL at $46 million annually. This seems to be the bottom-end starting point in talks between Goff and the Lions.

Of course, things can change on a dime. Detroit is set to play in just its second ever NFC Championship Game Sunday against the 49ers. A win in that game would set the stage for the organization’s first appearance in the Super Bowl, increasing Goff’s value in the process.
