The Cleveland Browns have signed a multi-year deal with one of their biggest stars, reportedly agreeing to a contract extension with running back Nick Chubb.
Chubb, a second-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, was up for a contract extension this offseason along with quarterback Baker Mayfield and offensive lineman Wyatt Teller. After months of negotiations, Cleveland reached the finish line with its top offensive weapon on Saturday.
NFL insider Josina Anderson first reported the two sides were making significant progress in negotiations. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Chubb and the Browns agreed to a three-year extension worth $36.6 million.
- Nick Chubb stats (2020): 1,067 rushing yards, 12 rushing touchdowns, 5.6 yards per carry (12 games)
A two-time Pro Bowl selection, Chubb overcame an MCL sprain midway through the 2020 season to deliver another phenomenal year on the ground. Splitting work with Kareem Hunt, Chubb played a crucial role in the Browns reaching the playoffs and beating the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Wild Card Game.
While knee injuries have been an issue for Chubb dating back to his days with the Georgia Bulldogs, the Browns wanted to sign him to a long-term deal. On the verge of hitting free agency next season, both sides found middle ground early in training camp.
The total value of the contract ($36.6 million) makes Chubb the eighth-highest-paid running back in the NFL. But the average annual salary, ranks sixth at his position. As part of the agreement, he receives $20 million fully guaranteed.
By agreeing to a shorter deal, Cleveland avoids the kind of long-term commitment that has hurt teams like the Los Angeles Rams (Todd Gurley) and Dallas Cowboys (Ezekiel Elliott) in recent years.
While Mayfield is open to an extension, the Browns are expected to let things play out this season. Eligible for free agency in 2023, there’s a strong possibility Mayfield receives the franchise tag in two years.
