‘Slammed door shut’: Myles Garrett-Cleveland Browns trade demand saga escalates

The drama surrounding Myles Garrett and the Cleveland Browns shows no signs of ending.

Garrett, the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year and four-time All-Pro, wants out of Cleveland. During his eight seasons, he’s made the playoffs just twice while enduring both an 0-16 rookie campaign and last year’s 3-14 disaster. Meanwhile, the Browns committed $230 million guaranteed to Deshaun Watson, who has become the league’s worst quarterback.

“Speaking with the management at the Browns, I don’t feel like our future is aligned with winning right now,” Garrett told ESPN’s “NFL Countdown” on Super Bowl Sunday. “And that’s what I’m looking forward to do at this stage of my career.”

However, as of now, the Browns have no intention of honoring that request. General manager Andrew Berry reiterated to reporters at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis that they won’t trade Garrett, and head coach Kevin Stefanski stated that the defensive stalwart will be part of the franchise’s future.

Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot reported Thursday that Garrett is “not open to” a contract extension with the Browns and has “slammed the door shut on negotiations.”

According to ESPN’s Daniel Oyefusi, the Browns received the message when they met with Garrett’s representatives at the combine.

The Browns could get a massive haul for Garrett, including at least two first-round picks to help rebuild a franchise that desperately needs an overhaul. However, maintaining their current stance accomplishes little if Garrett is determined to leave.

Garrett still has two years remaining on the five-year, $125 million extension he signed with the Browns that runs through the 2026 season. However, he has no guaranteed money left on his contract.
