The Cleveland Cavaliers shocked the NBA world in September 2022 by trading for All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell. Less than two years later, the Cavaliers may reportedly need to start floating Mitchell’s name in NBA trade rumors this offseason.

Cleveland sacrificed significant assets to acquire Mitchell, parting ways with Lauri Markkanen, Collin Sexton, three first-round picks and two future pick swaps. It was an aggressive move for the Cavaliers’ front office meant to push the team over the top, creating an outstanding trio with Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen.

While the Cavaliers have combined to win 99 games over the last two seasons and with the fourth-best record in the Eastern Conference this year, all of that reportedly might not be enough to keep Mitchell around.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, there’s a growing belief around the league that the Cavaliers will be forced to trade Mitchell in the coming months if the two sides can’t agree on a contract extension.

Mitchell is still under team control for another year, but rising NBA revenue and player salaries make it a foregone conclusion that he would opt out of his $37 million salary for the 2025-’26 season. Cleveland wants to keep him, but it also recognizes now is the only time to move him for a quality return if he won’t re-sign.

If the Cavaliers can’t come to terms with their All-Star guard on a long-term deal, a move to a new team feels likely. As for potential trade destinations for Mitchell, the Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat, Houston Rockets and New York Knicks could all be viable destinations. It’s also worth keeping in mind that the San Antonio Spurs could be aggressive this summer as they seek an All-Star player to pair with Victor Wembanyama.
