Brian Daboll clear favorite to become the next Miami Dolphins head coach

Brian Daboll has been among the biggest names on the NFL head coach circuit this cycle after his Buffalo Bills put up a dominant offensive performance during the 2021 season.

Daboll, 46, has primarily been linked to the New York Giants’ opening following the firing of head coach Joe Judge after two seasons.

That was taken to a whole new level after New York hired Joe Schoen away from the Bills to become the Giants’ new general manager.

With Daboll having interviewed for a second time in Jersey, it’s now being reported that he’s actually favored to land in another spot.

According to Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News, Daboll has emerged as the clear favorite to become the Miami Dolphins’ next head coach.

“Several league sources believe Bills OC Brian Daboll is the favorite to be the Miami Dolphins’ next head coach.
If Daboll takes that job, Dan Quinn & Brian Flores are the leading contenders to be the Giants’ next head coach, to me. NYG’s done significant work on both,” Leonard noted on Wednesday.

This is a rather interesting development given Daboll’s relationship with the aforementioned Schoen.

It would certainly seem to be a great fit in South Beach after Miami shockingly fired Brian Flores. It seems clear that general manager Chris Grier and owner Stephen Ross are looking at offensive-minded candidate to help young quarterback Tua Tagovailoa progress under center.

The Bills’ offensive coordinator since 2018, Daboll would more than fit the bill. He helped Josh Allen morph into a legit superstar after the former No. 7 overall pick was seen as a major project heading into the 2018 NFL Draft.

  • Josh Allen stats: 63.3% completion, 4,407 passing yards, 763 rushing yards, 42 total TD, 15 INT, 92.2 rating

As for the Bills’ offense, they finished this past season No. 5 in yards and No. 3 in points scored. The Unit has finished in the top three in the latter category each of the past two seasons.

Prior to his run in Buffalo, Brian Daboll also served as the offensive coordinator with the Cleveland Browns (2009-10), Miami Dolphins (2011) and Kansas City Chiefs (2012). From 2013-16, he was the New England Patriots tight ends coach before heading to Alabama in 2017 to be the offensive coordinator under Nick Saban.

For Miami, the goal has to be to get more out of Tua. That was one of the primary reasons the team parted ways with Flores after three pretty successful seasons. Flores was not necessarily a fan of the former Crimson Tide star.

In Daboll, Tagovailoa would be getting someone he’s familiar with. The quarterback worked under the likely new Dolphins head coach with Alabama back in 2017.
