Alabama Crimson tide play-caller Bill O’Brien could. be poised for an NFL return after Josh McDaniels left the New England Patriots to coach the Las Vegas Raiders.

O’Brien, who joined Nick Saban’s staff in January 2021, has been looking to join an NFL coaching staff. He interview for the Carolina Panthers vacancy at offensive coordinator before Matt Rhule hired Ben McAdoo. With Bill Belichick now looking for a new play-caller, everything seems to be pointing towards a reunion in New England.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport shared on the Pat McAfee Show that O’Brien is a name to keep an eye on for the Patriots. He specifically mentioned that one big reason McDaniels backed out on the Indianapolis Colts coaching job in 2018 is that New England didn’t have a succession plan to replace its offensive coordinator.

Before Sunday’s conference title games, ESPN’s Adam Schefter also mentioned O’Brien as a possible replacement for McDaniels.

It would be a natural fit for both sides. O’Brien worked on Belichick’s coaching staff from 2011-’17. He started as an offensive assistant, climbing the ladder and working his way up to quarterbacks coach (2009-’10). Belichick promoted him to offensive coordinator in 2011, a position he held until taking over at Penn State.

O’Brien has received praise from players for his work ethic and for developing strong relationships with his quarterback. Furthermore, reigning Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young credited O’Brien for a lot of his success this past season.

If O’Brien is hired, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the New England Patriots more effectively use 2TE sets next season. If Mac Jones progresses, O’Brien could be a top NFL coaching candidate in 2023.
