The 2020 NBA Draft is finally approaching. Now that we’re getting close, rumors are going to start picking up about potential trades.
Could the Minnesota Timberwolves trade the first overall pick for a proven player and future draft assets? We already know the Golden State Warriors are looking to pull off a trade of their own.
As we check in on the coming 2020 NBA Draft, here’s a look at four trades that could shake up the annual event around the league.
2020 NBA Draft: Minnesota Timberwolves trade first overall pick to the Chicago Bulls
Trade details: Timberwolves get fourth pick, Lauri Markkanen and Bulls 2021 first-round pick
Rumors continue to persist leading up to the 2020 NBA Draft that the Bulls are looking to trade up from the fourth selection. Meanwhile, we’ve heard suggestions that Minnesota will do what it can do move down from the first pick. It’s in this that the above-mentioned trade makes a ton of sense.
Minnesota will be able to get a top-four player in the draft. It would likely be able to choose from one of the top prospects outside of the top three. My money here would be on Israeli star, small forward Deni Avdija. He’s seen as a poor man’s Luka Doncic. The Wolves would also be trading for a replacement for Andrew Wiggins in that of Markkanen while recouping the first-round pick they dealt away in the Andrew Wiggins trade.
As for the Bulls, it’s obvious that LaMelo Ball is their target right now. Moving an expiring contract in that of Markkanen and a first-round pick in the 2021 NBA Draft might just be worth it. A wing trio of Ball, Coby White and Zach LaVine to team up with Wendell Carter Jr. would like pretty nice.

2020 NBA Draft: San Antonio Spurs trade DeMar DeRozan to the Dallas Mavericks
Trade details: Spurs get first-round pick (18th overall), Tim Hardaway Jr., Delon Wright and Maxi Kleber
We know full well that Mark Cuban is among the most-aggressive owners in the NBA. We’re also hearing reports that the Mavericks are attempting to acquire a third star to team up with Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis. While a trade between these two rivals would be a rarity, this seems to make a lot of sense. First off, DeRozan would be a great fit with Doncic.

Secondly, the Spurs need to go into full-scale rebuild mode after missing the NBA Playoffs for the first time snice 1996-97. Assuming DeRozan picks up his option (he will), moving the All-Star for assets makes the most sense. In this hypothetical trade, San Antonio adds another first-round pick to the mix and a pretty darn good big man in that of Kleber while taking on multiple contracts to make the deal work.
2020 NBA Draft: Golden State Warriors trade second overall pick to the Atlanta Hawks
Trade details: Warriors get John Collins from the Hawks
Rumors around the NBA water cooler suggest that Golden State is still looking to package the second overall pick for a proven talent. The team might not even be looking to acquire a later first-round pick in exchange. The idea would be to keep the Warriors’ championship window open after Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson’s lost 2019-20 seasons.
In acquiring Collins, that’s exactly what Golden State would be doing. The 23-year-old big man averaged 21.6 points and 10.1 rebounds a season ago. Despite this, he’s likely going to demand a max contract. Atlanta doesn’t seem willing to do that. Despite being over the luxury tax, the Warriors could make it work due to Collins’ Bird Rights. They’re also open to spending.

As for the Hawks, this makes perfect sense. First off, Hawks general manager Travis Schlenk has a built-in relationship with the Warriors dating back to his days as their assistant general manager. Secondly, being able to get two top-six picks to team up with Trae Young makes sense. Imagine Atlanta being able to pick up the combo of Anthony Edwards and Obi Toppin here. That would be very nice.
2020 NBA Draft: Phoenix Suns trade 10th pick to the Cleveland Cavaliers
Trade details: Suns acquire Collin Sexton and Kevin Love from the Cavaliers for 10th pick, Kelly Oubre, Cameron Johnson and Ricky Rubio
Rumors around the NBA are picking up as it relates to Sexton potentially being moved just two seasons after Cleveland made him a lottery pick. Despite some questions about him, the numbers are there for the 21-year-old Sexton. He averaged 20.8 points on a solid 47% shooting from the field last season.

Phoenix would like to acquire your more traditional point guard to team up with Devin Booker. The team just isn’t going to get a player of Sexton’s caliber at 10. Instead, the Suns hope he can turn into more of a ball distributor in the desert. Phoenix also picks up a player it has long coveted in that of All-Star big man Kevin Love.
In turn, Cleveland acquires a second top-10 pick to continue with its rebuild. The cornerstone would obviously be Darius Garland moving forward. Acquiring an underrated wing in Kelly Oubre would be icing on the cake. Heck, Phoenix would have to part with former top-11 pick Cameron Johnson in this trade.
