The Dallas Cowboys and star quarterback Dak Prescott were unable to come to terms on a long-term extension earlier in the offseason.
In fact, Prescott turned down an offer from the Cowboys shortly before the division-rival Philadelphia Eagles inked Carson Wentz to a record-breaking contract.
In no way does this mean the two sides won’t be able to get together on a new deal prior to Prescott entering his contract season.
According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, Prescott remains the Cowboys’ top off-season priority.
This is rather interesting given that Cowboys receiver Amari Cooper, also entering a contract year, seemed to be closer than Prescott to inking a new deal.
Meanwhile, stud running back Ezekiel Elliott is also in line for an extension.
In today’s quarterback-driven league it makes perfect sense to focus on that position first. Given how the quarterback market has completely reset itself multiple times over the past two calendar years, that’s magnified even further.
Prescott is looking at a long-term deal that will pay him well north of $30 million annually. If that does not come to fruition ahead of the 2019 campaign, Dallas would likely be forced to place the franchise tag on him next March.
