Report: Rex Ryan coveted by prominent former Miami players to replace Mark Richt

Rex Ryan

The stunning news that Miami head football coach Mark Richt has retired from coaching has sparked some pretty interesting conversations. One of those conversations reportedly revolves around former NFL head coach Rex Ryan.

According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, a couple of prominent former Miami players are pushing behind the scenes for Ryan to replace Richt. He also adds that Ryan is believed to have interest if he’s contacted officially by the university about the suddenly vacant position.

Ryan is currently an NFL analyst for ESPN, but he’s made it clear recently that coaching again is definitely on his mind.

There will obviously be plenty of other candidates for the job. One name being thrown around quite a bit is current Oregon coach Mario Cristobol, and of course Mike Leach is, as well.

However, another name that’s been mentioned — a guy who already has the strong support of a huge Miami legend — is none other than Lane Kiffin.
