Dez Bryant: I’ll be ‘better than I was’ in 2014

Dez Bryant isn’t practicing with the Dallas Cowboys just yet as he recovers from foot surgery, but he’s confident about being better than ever before when he returns to action.

According to Jon Machota of SportsDay, Bryant will have X-rays on his surgically repaired foot next week. If cleared, Bryant would be able to engage in competitive training for the first time this offseason.

And when he does come back, he expects to put up even better numbers than he did in 2014, when he posted career-high numbers (88 catches for 1,320 yards and 16 touchdowns).

“Man, I’m not even trying to [get back] to 2014,” he said. “I’m past that. I’m going to be better than that. I’m going to. The way we’ve been working, the way the coaches have been on us, the way we’ve been holding each other accountable, I think that alone is going to make us all be better than what we were in these past years.”

A lot will depend on the health of running mate Tony Romo, who also had offseason surgery to strengthen his oft-injured collarbone. Romo is already back to full throwing and full participation in practice. Coaches says he’s looking re-energized for a new season, and if both he and Bryant are at their best it is conceivable the receiver could put up even bigger stats.

The Cowboys have expressed optimism about Bryant’s overall sense of purpose and his health of late. Clearly, he’s not having any confidence issues coming back from a season full of disappointment.
