Cowboys coach: Tony Romo looks ‘re-energized’ following lost season

Tony Romo

Tony Romo’s recovery from offseason collarbone surgery is going swimmingly. He’s back in his groove, and Dallas Cowboys quarterback coach Wade Wilson has noted a particular spring in his step this spring after Romo missed most of the 2015 campaign.

“He’s looking good,” Wilson said, via Brandon George of SportsDay. “We had two practices where we’ve been out here on the field with the guys and he’s done everything. He’s throwing, he’s got good velocity on all of his throws, great movement in his legs. He looks like he’s re-energized because he hadn’t played, you know, missed the majority of the season. So he’s real energized and anxious to get going.”

Everyone, both within and without the organization, realizes Romo is the key to Dallas either succeeding or failing right now. Thankfully it appears he’s in great health and is raring to get back to business.

The Cowboys have pretty much put all their eggs into the Romo basket the past decade and just this year finally drafted a quarterback in Dak Prescott who could potentially be his future replacement. He’s in charge of his own health regimen, Wilson said, and he’s responsible for making sure he doesn’t push himself too hard when he feels sore.

The upcoming season is exciting for the Cowboys and their fans. With the selection of running back Ezekiel Elliott, Dallas has once again added to its offensive arsenal. Previous years had been dedicated to building up the team’s offensive line. Now the ‘Boys have the makings of a second-generation “triplets” with Romo, Elliott and Dez Bryant taking the place of Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin.

There is plenty of deserved hype around Elliott, who recently expressed his respect for Smith by saying he’d never consider donning the No. 22 uniform in Dallas. He’s also slated to be one of the NFL’s highest-paid running backs after being selected so high in the 2016 NFL draft.

But the Cowboys’ Super Bowl hopes live and die with Romo. When healthy, he’s unquestionably one of the NFL’s top passers, and he’s battle-tested after so many hard knocks early in his career. If he can remain in good health throughout the season, Dallas has as good a chance as any NFC team to make it to Super Bowl LI.
