Senquez Golson’s rookie campaign might be over before it starts.
According to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pittsburgh Steelers are “considering several options” for the cornerback, and one choice is season-ending shoulder surgery. Per Bouchette:
“Golson has been on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list since the start of training camp July 25. He went through spring practices with no apparent issues but later told team officials he thought he injured his shoulder during those practices.”
Golson, who picked off 10 passes for Ole Miss last season, was expected to contend for a regular role on a defense that remains in desperate need of a ball-hawking defensive back.
Pittsburgh snatched the seventh-fewest interceptions and allowed the sixth-most passing yards per game in 2014. It also surrendered the second-most 40-plus-yard receptions.
The Steelers recently acquired Brandon Boykin from the Philadelphia Eagles, and he’ll push Cortez Allen and William Gay for a starting role.
After Golson’s setback, however, Pittsburgh is once again playing catch-up rather than moving forward.
