Yankees’ Domingo German fires perfect game vs. A’s

New York Yankees right-hander Domingo German threw the 24th perfect game in major league history, dominating the host Oakland Athletics in a 11-0 win on Wednesday.

German (5-5) struck out nine and threw 99 pitches in the gem, which was the first no-hitter of the 2023 season.

The 30-year-old Dominican right-hander is less than a month removed from serving a 10-day suspension for violating MLB’s policy on grip-enhancing substances.

In the ninth inning, Aledmys Diaz grounded out to shortstop, Shea Langeliers popped out to center field and Esteury Ruiz bounced out to third. New York’s Josh Donaldson, a former A’s third baseman, threw to first baseman Anthony Rizzo for the final out.

German fired the first perfect game since the Seattle Mariners’ Felix Hernandez fanned 12 in a 1-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Aug. 15, 2012.

The most recent major league no-hitter was a combined gem from four Houston Astros pitchers in Game 4 of the 2022 World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies on Nov. 2, 2022.

The most recent regular-season no-hitter was another combined job by three Astros last June 25 against the Yankees. The Los Angeles Angels’ Reid Detmers tossed the most recent solo no-hitter, beating the Rays 12-0 on May 10, 2022.

The last Yankee to throw a no-hitter was Corey Kluber on May 19, 2021, against the Texas Rangers.

German joins David Cone (1999 vs. the Montreal Expos), David Wells (1998 vs. the Minnesota Twins) and Don Larsen (1956 World Series vs. the Brooklyn Dodgers) as the only Yankees to produce perfect games.

The Yankees got a fourth-inning homer from Giancarlo Stanton, who joined teammates Anthony Volpe and Harrison Bader in collecting two hits.
