Kyle Seager hit a two-run home run with two outs in the seventh inning to break a tie and lead the host Seattle Mariners to a 4-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday afternoon, despite another home run by the Royals’ Salvador Perez.
Jarred Kelenic also homered and left-hander Marco Gonzales (6-5) pitched seven strong innings for Seattle, which salvaged the finale of the four-game series.
Perez homered for a fifth consecutive game, eclipsing his previous career-best set in 2017. It was his 38th of the season.
Michael A. Taylor also went deep for the Royals, who finished their 10-game trip with a 7-3 record.
Gonzales allowed two runs — both on solo shots — on five hits. He walked two and struck out four to win his fifth consecutive decision.
Seager’s homer off right-hander Tyler Zuber (0-3) broke a 2-2 tie.
The Royals got a run back in the eighth as Nicky Lopez singled and scored on a one-out single by Perez off Paul Sewald, but fellow right-hander Drew Steckenrider pitched a perfect ninth for his seventh save.
The Mariners scored an unearned run in the first. With two outs, Royals right fielder Edward Olivares dropped a fly ball by Seager for a two-base error. Ty France grounded a run-scoring single into center to make it 1-0.
The Mariners didn’t manage another hit off right-hander Brady Singer until the fifth, when Mitch Haniger grounded a two-out single to center.
With one out in the top of the sixth, Perez hit the first pitch of the at-bat from Gonzales off the facade of the second deck in left field.
The Mariners regained the lead when Kelenic went deep to right-center with two outs in the bottom of the sixth.
The Royals tied it at 2-2 with one out in the seventh as Taylor homered to left.
Singer went six innings and allowed two runs — one earned — on three hits. The right-hander walked three and struck out five.
