Todd Bowles took over as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach in 2022 with many expecting the team to be a viable playoff contender. Even after a disappointing season with Tom Brady seemingly destined to leave in free agency, Bowles’ job reportedly isn’t in jeopardy.
Bowles landed his first NFL head-coaching job with the New York Jets in 2015. He lasted four seasons, winning 10 games in 2015, before the team won a combined 14 games over the next three years.
Widely regarded as one of the best defensive minds in the NFL, he joined Tampa Bay as its defensive coordinator in 2019. Bowles helped orchestrate one of the best defenses in football from 2020-’21, playing an instrumental role in becoming Super Bowl LV champions.

Immediately named the Buccaneers’ head coach after Bruce Arians resigned, many viewed Tampa Bay as one of the Super Bowl favorites. However, the team finished the regular season with an 8-9 record and only made it into the NFL playoffs because of the weak NFC South.
According to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, Bowles is expected to remain the Buccaneers’ head coach in 2023. Barring a sudden change of heart within the organization, which is unlikely, the head coach is one of the few positions that won’t be overhauled this offseason.
It wouldn’t be a surprising decision by Tampa Bay to keep Bowles. While the Houston Texans and Denver Broncos had one-and-done coaches this year, it remains very rare in the NFL. Much like the New Orleans Saints, stable organizations rarely make abrupt coaching changes after one year.

Bowles will likely be back in 2023, returning to a team that could lose Brady, linebacker Lavonte David and several other impact players to the open market. If the right reinforcements aren’t made, the 2023 season could be Bowles’ last in Tampa Bay and the final time he is a head coach.
