Tiger Woods to undergo fusion procedure that will sideline him for months

Golf legend Tiger Woods revealed on Wednesday that he is set to undergo a procedure that could force him out of action for several months.

It is well known at this point in his career that Tiger Woods has had a lot of trouble taking to the green and being a consistent competitor on the PGA Tour. A major reason has to do with the serious injuries he incurred serious injuries to his leg in a car crash two years ago. However, there is also the fact that the golf icon is 47 years old and his body is not what it once was.

Woods hasn’t competed often since the accident and he often has a notable limp while walking the greens in the tournaments he has taken part in. Most recently, he competed in the 2023 Masters but withdrew after not making the cut.

After his participation in the first major of the year, his legion of fans has wondered when they will next be able to see him compete. Well, it looks like it could be a very long wait until Tiger Woods has a first-round tee time for a PGA event.

On Wednesday, Woods revealed on his social media accounts that he will be having surgery to deal with arthritis that has come from a previous fracture to one of the bones in his ankle.

“Earlier today, Tiger underwent a subtalar fusion procedure to address his post-traumatic arthritis from his previous talus fracture. It was performed by Dr. Martin O’Malley at HSS Sports Medicine Institute in New York City. He has determined the surgery to be successful. Tiger is currently recovering and looks forward to beginning his rehabilitation.”

As described by HopkinsMedicine.org, a subtalar fusion is a procedure to “fuse the bones of your ankle into one piece.” This particular procedure usually requires a recovery time of 10 to 12 weeks, meaning Tiger Woods may not be available to return to action until the back end of the summer.
