Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll has become beloved in Washington and is recognized as one of the best coaches of his era. With more NFL coaches fired this Black Monday, Carroll’s future in Seattle and the final stage of his coaching career have become more of a question.

Carroll, 72, has worked as the Seahawks head coach and vice president of football operations since 2010. During that time, Seattle has won the Super Bowl, made the playoffs 10 times and delivered one of the best stretches of success in franchise history.

However, the Seahawks haven’t nearly reached the heights fans or the organization are accused to seeing. Seattle last won a playoff game on Jan.5, 2019, and it hasn’t achieved double-digit wins since 2020. While there’s plenty of talent on the roster, some have wondered about the coaching. If a change does come, however, it seems like it will be on Carroll’s terms.

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Seahawks front office is evaluating and updating contingency plans to replace Carroll if he decides to walk away. Seattle will also meet with Carroll to discuss his future and the organization’s next steps after the season.

It’s understandable why the Seahawks would let Carroll finish his tenure on his terms. He’s the most successful coach in franchise history and unlike Bill Belichick with the New England Patriots, Seattle remains a competitive NFL team.

What Pelissero doesn’t address is the future of the Seahawks coaching staff. Under offensive coordinator Shane Waldron and defensive coordinator Clint Hurtt, Seattle’s offense and defense have both underperformed this season.

While Carroll is a defensive-minded head coach Hurtt is the team’s defensive coordinator. After two consecutive years of this unit falling short of expectations despite having plenty of talent on the roster, it’s possible the Seahawks make a change at defensive coordinator this offseason.
