The San Francisco 49ers have been in the market for a backup quarterback to young starter Brock Purdy. That included being linked to Zach Wilson of the New York Jets.
Apparently, general manager John Lynch and Co. decided to go in another direction. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, San Francisco has signed veteran free agent Joshua Dobbs away from the Minnesota Vikings.
Schefter notes that the deal is for one year and $2.25 million, all guaranteed.
This comes after the Vikings signed former 49ers backup quarterback Sam Darnold as a potential replacement for Kirk Cousins who left for the Atlanta Falcons earlier in NFL free agency.
Dobbs, 29, split time between the Arizona Cardinals and Vikings a season ago. The former fourth-round pick from Tennessee started 12 games, completing 63% of his passes for 2,464 yards with 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Dobbs was an original selection of the Steelers back in 2017. He spent four seasons with the team before moving on to the Tennessee Titans in 2022.

San Francisco has been in the market for a backup all offseason. It appears that Dobbs will take over for Brandon Allen as QB2 behind Purdy given the guarantees he has on his deal with the 49ers.
All of this comes after Purdy found himself as an NFL MVP finalist this past season as a sophomore. The former seventh-round pick put up 4,280 yards with 31 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
