The man behind the iconic role of Apollo Creed from the “Rocky” film series, Carl Weathers, has passed away at 76 years old.
On Friday, the family of Carl Weathers — an actor who grew to legendary status threw his portrayal of Apollo Creed in the first four “Rocky” films — announced the passing of the talented thespian in his sleep on Thursday.

While the 76-year-old created a memorable career that spanned six decades, few realize that before he took his good looks and sculpted physique to Hollywood, he played two seasons with the then-Oakland Raiders as an undrafted talent from San Diego State. In 1970 and ’71 he competed in only nine games and never earned a start.
Carl Weathers landed Apollo Creed role just five years after Raiders career ended
Five years after his football career ended, he became a part of the most famous boxing franchise in film history when he was given the role of antagonist Apollo Creed in the film “Rocky.” The movie written, produced, directed, and starring Sylvester Stallone went on to be a big hit and landed the film several Oscar nominations.
Its success spawned six films in total and a spinoff series, “Creed” that is headed toward its third installment. That series follows the career of Creed’s son as he creates a legacy in the shadow of his deceased father.

After being bumped off by legendary bad guy Ivan Vasilyevich Drago in the fourth “Rocky” film, Weathers went on to have a memorable role in the iconic science fiction film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, “Predator.” In the 1990s, he kept his brand viable during his appearance in another beloved sports film, Adam Sandler’s 1996 comedy “Happy Gilmore.”
Over the last three decades, he has played various roles but rose to a new level of popularity in the 2020s via his part in the popular Disney+ Star Wars series “The Mandalorian.” Where he played fan favorite Greef Karga.
