A Philadelphia Eagles insider believes the team could throw around some big money to steal away a New York Giants star who has become “one of the best safeties in the NFL.”

Following Tuesday’s NFL franchise tag deadline, the groundwork for 2024 NFL free agency is set for when it kicks off on Monday, March 11. The Philadelphia Eagles will have a chance to make some noise in this year’s market since they are expected to have over $40 million in cap space to use in the coming months (via OverTheCap).

Improving a defense that took some major steps back in 2023 after being the backbone of their run to their Super Bowl two seasons ago is sure to be a priority. One area that is likely to get some focus is the team’s secondary after they went from being the best team in the NFL against the pass in 2022 to one of the worst this past season.

There are some notable secondary players on this year’s market, including Stephone Gilmore and Kamren Curl. However, Philly Voice Eagles beat writer Jimmy Kempski believes one particular player could be a top target for the organization, and it would mean stealing away a star from a rival team.

Xavier McKinney stats (2023): 116 tackles, 3 INT, 11 passed defended, 1 forced fumble

“It was a curious decision for the Giants not to tag [Xavier] McKinney, seeing as they don’t have many good players. It’s a lot easier to open up cap space than it is to find good players, and they might regret losing him. The Eagles need a starting safety, and there’s a chance they’ll be shopping at the top of the market for one. It’s perhaps worth noting that Jalen Hurts is good friends with McKinney from their time together at Alabama.”

After three seasons in the league, Xavier McKinney had a breakout season in 2023. Posting career highs in tackles (116), and passes defended (11), plus he also reeled in three more interceptions. At just 24 he is one of the best young secondary players in the league and could be a major long-term addition for the Eagles if they can pursue him to come down I-95 to Philadelphia in NFL free agency.
