The reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles have already been active ahead of NFL free agency. All-Pro linebacker Zack Baun was re-signed to a lucrative deal, while cornerbacks Darius Slay and James Bradberry were released. Now, the Eagles roster could be forced to take another hit this offseason.
Re-signing Baun was a top priority for Philadelphia. It keeps the standout off-ball linebacker as an integral part of Vic Fangio’s defense, and it also takes off the board one of the top NFL free agents. With the club also attempting to re-sign defensive tackle Milton Williams, edge rusher Josh Sweat and guard Mekhi Becton, other cap casualties could be looming.

On a recent episode of unCovering the Birds with Jeff McLane, the Eagles insider shared a conversation he had with an agent who believes tight end Dallas Goedert will be traded this offseason.
“One of those tips came via an agent I had known for years, who I ran into at the JW Marriott. He was convinced the Eagles wouldn’t be bringing back tight end Dallas Goedert, and offered information that suggested as much. Goedert has been one of the best at his position for the last several years. But staying healthy has been an issue. He’s under contract for the 2025 season. But he doesn’t have any remaining guaranteed money remaining on his contract and he just turned 30”

McLane also shared that he reached out to sources around the league who “verified” that it’s not a lock for Goedert to be on the Eagles roster next season. However, a potential move is complicated because the team doesn’t have a clear replacement at tight end.

Fortunately for Philadelphia, the 2025 NFL Draft class is viewed as being uniquely deep at tight end this offseason. The Eagles could try to take advantage of potential contenders who want a proven pass-catcher at tight end rather than betting on a rookie at a position that typically doesn’t deliver standouts immediately.
Goedert hasn’t played in 15-plus games since the 2021 season and he’s failed to eclipse 600 receiving yards or reach 4 touchdowns in each of his last two seasons. Entering the last year of his deal, the Eagles would free up $6.789 million in cap space if Goedert is designated as a post-June 1 trade.
