The month of May brings the second men’s professional major tournament of the year in the PGA Championship.
Since 1916, the PGA Championship has been home to some of golf’s brightest moments in the history of the sport, from Walter Hagen’s four straight wins from 1924-27 to more recently Justin Thomas’ comeback victory in 2022 and Phil Mickelson becoming the oldest golfer to win a major tournament in 2021.
Who won the 2024 PGA Championship
In 2024, Xander Schauffele secured his first major championship by making a 6-foot putt on the 72nd hole to defeat Bryson DeChambeau by one stroke at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky.
Schauffele, who posted a 9-under 62 in the first round, became the first player in major championship history to record multiple rounds of 62 after doing so during the 2023 U.S. Open.
Who won the PGA Championship 2023
In 2023, Brooks Koepka won the PGA Championship, shooting 9-under par, while defeating Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler by two strokes at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y.
That marked his third PGA Championship win, tying with Gene Sarazen and Sam Snead, and only trailing Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Walter Hagen for more PGA Championship victories.
What is the name of the PGA Championship trophy?
Like some tournaments both in golf and in other sports, trophies have their own name. The Lombardi Trophy. The Stanley Cup. The Commissioner’s Trophy. The Larry O’Brien Trophy.
In golf, the most notable name outside of the PGA Championship trophy is The Claret Jug for the winner of the Open Championship. The PGA Championship trophy also have a name, called the Wanamaker Trophy.
The PGA Championship trophy is named after Rodman Wanamaker, who founded the PGA of America. Wanamaker reached out to some of game’s greats at the time in Francis Ouimet and Walter Hagen about a national organization for professional golf. At the time in the 1910s and the early 20th century, professional golfers were only hired, and Wanamaker decided to change that, forming the PGA of America in 1916.
And since its inception tournament in 1916, the Wanamaker trophy has been hoisted by the winner of the PGA Championship.
The Wanamaker trophy is 28 inches high, 27 inches from handle to handle and weighs 27 pounds.
