Orlando Magic targeting top free agency sharpshooter this summer

No matter who wins the NBA Finals, all 30 teams in the Association will look to improve their rosters this offseason. After finishing 13th in the East, that group definitely includes the Orlando Magic too.

The Magic have several ways to improve the roster around Jalen Suggs and Rookie of the Year Paolo Banchero this summer. Not only does Orlando have both the sixth and 11th picks in the 2023 NBA Draft, they also have $25 million to spend in free agency right now and could carve out as much as $60 million in cap room if they wish.

Whether it’s through free agency or the draft, the Magic will make upgrades to the roster. It’s just a matter of who they’re targeting.

One potential solution is Toronto Raptors shooting guard Gary Trent Jr., who has an $18 million player option that he will likely decline this offseason so he can enter free agency. Trent, 24, projects to be one of the best sharpshooter free agents available this offseason.

According to The Heavy’s Sean Deveney, the Magic “firmly have their eyes on Trent” in free agency, while an Eastern Conference executive indicated “He’d be a good bet as their top priority” this summer.

If the team did pursue Trent, it could spell the end of days with Gary Harris, who has a $13 million non-guaranteed contract for next season. The contract becomes fully guaranteed on June 30.

As mentioned, the Magic will have plenty of options to consider this offseason. Adding Trent may very well be near the top of their list.
