Orioles GM offers brilliant quote summing up team’s flurry of deadline moves

The Baltimore Orioles were headed to perhaps a historic tank job at top speed heading into the MLB trade deadline, and then they blew it all up.

The team’s flurry of activity included moving star Manny Machado in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers ahead of the deadline, along with moving second baseman Johnathan Schoop to Milwaukee right near the deadline Tuesday. There were many more moves made, including moving Zach Britton and Kevin Gausman.

Orioles executive director of baseball operations Dan Duquette offered a brilliant quote afterward to explain the team’s thinking.

“I hear it’s easier to demolish the entire house and rebuild from the ground up rather than renovating one room at a time,” he said, per Ken Rothenthal of The Athletic.

Truer words ne’er spoken.

The Orioles are currently a mind-boggling 32-74 and a staggering 42 games behind the Boston Red Sox in the American League East.

Now, thanks to a sober approach to absolutely wrecking the roster, the team has a legitimate chance to rebuild in the coming years.
