The Habs enjoyed an important win in the last game before the Olympic break. Samuel Montembeault was excellent, stopping over 20 high-danger chances in the 4-1 win. It should also be noted veterans Brendan Gallagher and Josh Anderson played a big part in the victory. [Canadiens Highlights: Montembeault Shines Alongside Veterans]
The Canadiens aren’t without flaws, but they’re also the youngest team in the league, which means there’s very little pressure when it comes to making another big trade. According to Pierre LeBrun, Kent Hughes is working the phones, as per usual, but the Habs aren’t in any rush to complete a deal.
Pierre LeBrun: They're still making calls…looking at some top six options for sure, but I don't think the Habs feel it has to happen 100% like they have to make that happen before March 6th – Sick Podcast w/ Tony Marinaro (1/30)

Even though the veterans stole the show, Lane Hutson enjoyed yet another solid game, including a shift in which he made Mark Scheifele seem like a 90-year-old man who had accidentally ventured onto NHL ice.

Samuel Blais cleared waivers, which means he’ll report to the Laval Rocket, and will be able to play roughly nine games during the Olympic break. I genuinely thought there was a legitimate chance Blais would get plucked off waivers for a third time this season.

Speaking of the Rocket, Laval dominated the Utica Comets on Wednesday night, with Jacob Fowler stopping 24 of the 25 shots sent his way in the 6-2 win. Laurent Dauphin scored his 14th goal of the season, while prospect Sean Farrell found the back of the net for the 12th time this year. David Reinbacher was once again missing from the lineup while nursing his latest injury (day-to-day).
Minnesota Wild coach John Hynes today on Lane Hutson:

“Lane is a great offensive defenseman. He can skate, in the offensive zone he’s very mobile, he can beat you 1v1. He’s gonna run the line, he’s gonna cut back, he’s gonna spin…He’s a very active player.”

Tom Fitzgerald has pulled the trigger on a second New Jersey Devils trade in a week. New Jersey is acquiring forward Nick Bjugstad from the St. Louis Blues. The Devils send a 2026 fourth round pick and forward Thomas Bordeleau to St. Louis in return. [New Jersey Devils]
The Carolina Hurricanes did a lot right offensively in their 4-3 win over the Ottawa Senators, but Brandon Bussi made it possible against a hungry team. [Carolina Hurricanes]
A nightmare season just got worse for Pittsburgh Penguins defenceman Caleb Jones. On Wednesday, the NHL suspended Jones for 20 games for using a performance-enhancing substance. The league does not release further details in such cases, but both Jones and Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas released a statement shortly after the suspension. [Pittsburgh Penguins]
