Nick Suzuki got off to a great start at the Olympics, scoring a goal in Team Canada’s dominant 5-0 win over Czechia. Canadian head coach Jon Cooper used Suzuki on the second line, alongside Nathan MacKinnon and Brandon Hagel. He would have had two points, as he set up a MacKinnon goal early in the first period, but he simultaneously took a tripping penalty on the play. Eric Engels suggested the Habs would have to retain salary should they be interested in trading sniper Patrik Laine, but management is not interested in a trade that involves significant loss for very little short-term gain.
Eric Engels: We would expect the Canadiens to need to retain up to half of Patrik Laine’s…salary to get the remainder…off their books. But coupling that sacrifice with an asset…doesn’t appear to be on the table, according to league sources – Sportsnet (2/5)

ICYMI: Can Lane Hutson maintain his impressive point-per-game pace? It won’t be easy, and there are a few factors working against him, but on the flip side of the coin, it’s always a bad idea to bet against an elite athlete such as Hutson. Ivan Demidov continues to spend all his free time practising. The most shocking aspect of it all is that Hutson, another hockey addict, wasn’t glued to Demidov’s hip on Thursday.

Mullets, matching sweater numbers, and a deep friendship with one another, the group known as the ‘Traveling Jagrs’ was a sight to behold – and a sight sorely missed in stands across the league. Their last notable appearance was in February 2024, when their namesake Jaromir Jagr had his jersey retired by the Pittsburgh Penguins. However, there has been another notable group to spring up over the past year. [Carolina Hurricanes]
Sweden struggled early in its Olympics opener against Italy, but thanks in part to New York Rangers forward Mika Zibanejad, the Tre Kronor pulled out a 5-2 win over host Italy in Milan. [New York Rangers]
