Back in 2006, Roger Goodell became the NFL commissioner, replacing Paul Tagliabue after nearly 17 seasons in the same role. From Spygate, Bountygate, Deflategate, and increasing player safety concerns, Goodell has faced plenty of controversies over his 17-year reign, but his time ‘protecting the shield’ won’t come to an end any time soon.
According to Daniel Kaplan, Goodell’s long-rumored contract extension has officially been signed and finalized. While the specific financial terms are not available, Goodell’s new contract extends his reign as NFL commissioner through the 2027 season.
We may never learn Goodell’s salary, but Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk suggests it’s “probably more than $60 million per year.”
If so, Goodell’s take-home pay would top all other NFL players. The highest-paid NFL athlete today, Joe Burrow, earns an average of $55 million per season. Goodell may face scrutiny, but he’s never scored a touchdown or won a game.
Goodell, 64, is already the NFL’s second-longest-tenured commissioner, behind only Pete Rozelle, who was the commish from 1960 to 1989. A 29-year reign? Rozelle’s record is one that may never be broken, but Goodell’s come the closest so far.
