A new rumor offers the New England Patriots a great secondary option if they can’t complete a trade for AJ Brown in the coming days.

Despite being soundly beaten by the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl last month, the Patriots’ 2025 campaign far exceeded expectations and was a truly magical run. However, they won’t catch rivals by surprise this year, and need to improve certain key spots on the roster if they hope to be a Super Bowl contender again in 2026.

One position reports suggest is a top priority for the Patriots is wide receiver. After releasing Stefon Diggs last week, following a productive season, the team needs to find MVP candidate Drake Maye a new top target in the passing game. That is why the franchise has been linked to AJ Brown in recent weeks.

The Philadelphia Eagles star did not hide his frustration with the offense last season. It was bad enough that the three-time Pro Bowler being moved in the next few weeks is a very real possibility. Unfortunately, it seems the current asking price for Brown is pretty steep.

According to a report last week, the Patriots reached out to the Eagles and offered a first and third-round pick for the 28-year-old. Unfortunately for the Pats, rumors around the NFL are that Philly is seeking at least a first and second rounder for Brown.

Should the Patriots target Brian Thomas trade?

It is a cost the Patriots are probably unwilling to pay. However, an intriguing backup option for a lower cost has just emerged. SNY NFL insider Connor Hughes reports the Jacksonville Jaguars are taking offers on talented wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr.

The 23rd overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft had a big rookie season. Earning Pro Bowl honors by posting 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns on 87 catches. However, in 2025, he was not as effective in the new offense under head coach Liam Coen and offensive coordinator Grant Udinski. Tallying only 48 catches, 707 yards, and two TDs in 14 starts.

Thomas won’t come cheap, and the cost probably will start at the first-rounder the Patriots offered for Brown. While it would be a bit of a risk, it’s worth it for a 23-year-old who has already shown he can be a WR1 in the NFL. Furthermore, he is locked into two more seasons at a bargain rate, and New England would also have the option to extend him for another season in 2028.
