With the NFL’s brand continuing to grow outside of the United States, the league is reportedly plotting to take its most valuable yearly event to a city outside of the US.

When it comes to sports properties in the United States — the biggest media market in the world — there is no brand more profitable than the NFL. The league is on an absolute roll right now as their content pulls in massive ratings for their various broadcast partners, they make billions in those TV deals, and they sell out games across the country each week during the season.

However, for a media and sports giant like the National Football League, that doesn’t seem to be enough. That is why over the last decade they have made a concerted effort to spread the brand and the recognition of its franchises abroad.

games now take place in locales like England, Germany, and Mexico with some regularity, and for the third straight week, a game will be played in London. That growing relationship with England could lead to a shocking decision in the near future when it comes to the league’s biggest event, the Super Bowl.

Last week, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell claimed the league is looking into a possible Super Bowl outside the United States. On Sunday morning, ESPN league insider Adam Schefter reported that if the big game does go international, London is a near guarantee to get that historic first.

However, for those football fans worried about losing a chance to see the Super Bowl in person on US soil, the NFL insider did reveal that the Super Bowl in a foreign location “is not close to happening at this time.” The next three Super Bowls are already set for Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas in 2024, Caesars Superdome in New Orleans in 2025, and Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara in 2026.

Other sources also told Schefter there isn’t a great deal of momentum behind a SB outside the US, however, he was consistently given the impression that the idea “makes sense” and it is only a matter of time before it happens.
