The New York Giants had been in position to land the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft until they won their Week 17 matchup over the Indianapolis Colts 45-33. It was easily the highest-scoring game of the Giants’ season, and it may have been just enough to help head coach Brian Daboll keep his job for another season.

Yet, since the Giants won that game and finished with a 3-14 record, they instead have the third overall pick in the first round. That selection could be used to find their QB of the future.

However, recent rumors have suggested the Giants will trade for a veteran starter before the draft kicks off later in April. Now we may have a better idea of which quarterback the Giants may be targeting this offseason.

NFL insider speculates on Matthew Stafford trade to New York Giants

The Los Angeles Rams have admitted that they’d like a rapid solution to Matthew Stafford’s contract situation this offseason. The 37-year-old helped win the Rams a Super Bowl at the conclusion of the 2021 season. He’s been with the team for four seasons after being traded for Jared Goff.

Yet, last offseason, the Rams were embroiled in a contract standoff with their aging vet QB. He didn’t agree to a contract restructure until July 23, just when the Rams were getting ready to ramp up their season preparation.

Another contract discussion is expected this offseason because the Rams won’t want to have Stafford’s $49.6 cap hit on their books for 2025. They’re either expected to negotiate another contract restructure, which could extend his current agreement past 2026, or trade Stafford to another team.

Recently, NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah made it seem like a trade that would send Stafford to the New York Giants was imminent.

“I’d be so fascinated to see what trade compensation would look like if Giants traded for Stafford. If they could hold onto 3rd pick, they could have some really fun options.”

If the Giants could convince the Rams to trade their veteran quarterback, it would be an immediate upgrade for Malik Nabers, who already had 1,204 receiving yards as a rookie. Imagine what he could do with a consistent quarterback who could accurately place balls downfield.

As Jeremiah said, if the Giants could secure their QB for 2025, it would reduce the amount of pressure they’d have to find a future signal-caller and could then focus entirely on taking the best player available. That’s the best path to building a winner right away, which is likely what fourth-year general manager Joe Schoen will be prioritizing this offseason.
